Meta has just added the option of prescription lenses for their Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. While Meta's past smart glasses could have their lenses replaced with prescriptions, the newest update to the glasses is specifically made for users who need traditional eyewear. Meta says that the glasses should support practically all prescriptions, and new configurations for lenses and colors are coming to Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley frames.
The prescription version for the Ray-Ban glasses will come in two styles: the Blayzer, which is a rectangular frame, and the Scriber, which is more of a rounded type. Both cost $499 to pre-order now, and will officially release on April 14. The Meta Ray-Ban (Gen. 2) frames are getting the colors of peach and grey, as well as the lens colors of brown, grey, and sapphire. The Oakley frames are getting new frame and lens color options as well.
Customers that are part of the Early Access Program (EAP) have access to a new feature that will soon be coming to all customers. The feature allows the user to ask their glasses for WhatsApp summaries. Additionally, Neural Handwriting on Meta Ray-Ban Display is coming to all users soon. This technology allows the wearer to use their finger to write on any surface, and this will also work on iMessage for Apple users.
Meta is also making it so customers who need stronger prescriptions actually do not have to opt for a thicker lens. Instead, the premium materials that Meta is reportedly incorporating will allow stronger prescriptions to use thinner and less bulky lenses.
The addition of a prescription option to the various Meta models is not the beginning of a new generation, which is worth noting. The incorporation of prescriptions to these glasses will allow them to be more accessible to a wide variety of people, specially those who actually need glasses and not only for people who are just wearing Meta's glasses for the style or tech. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO for Meta, says that it is hard for him to imagine a world in the near future where AI glasses are a minority. He expects AI glasses tech to rapidly increase in popularity in the coming years.
With prescriptions now a part of Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley AI glasses, there will be more interest than ever for people to have access and enjoy the tech. The addition of AI in so many places, now in glasses, proves just how much the cutting-edge technology is blending with our everyday lives.
