For the first time, Dyson's newest product is a handheld, portable fan. Called the Hushjet Mini Cool, the device is meant to be held, swung around your neck, or put on a desk. The fan has a diameter of only 1.5 inches, a width roughly equal to a watch face, and weighs about as much as a smartphone.
While the Hushjet Mini Cool may seem to have a very small footprint, the device packs a punch. The fan has a maximum speed of 65,000 rpm (revolutions per minute), with its highest speed being 55 mph through five fan speeds. Additionally, the device is relatively quiet, with an anti-vibration rubber mount that is claimed to keep noise low. There is also a relatively large battery in the fan, a 5,000 mAh (milliampere-hour) battery that is able to be recharged in three hours through USB-C. In the lowest fan speed, the fan is claimed to run for six hours; however there is not a specified battery life for how long the fan would last at its full-powered setting, Boost Mode.
Similar to Dyson's other products, including their hair dryers, the Hushjet Mini Cool does not have any visible moving blades, which is important for safety since the fan can be used as a wearable. At the fan's lowest setting, it has a 52 dBa (decibel) hum (similar to the sound of medium rainfall), but in Boost Mode it makes a 72.5 dBa noise (closer to the volume of a vacuum).
The Hushjet Mini Cool comes with a Charging Stand, as well as a travel pouch and charging cable. The Charging Stand also acts as a mount so it can stand upright on a desk or other surface, making it so that the fan does not have to be held all the time. There is also a Neck Dock included, which allows the wearable to be worn around someone's neck when they are out traveling, exercising, or taking part in another activity that makes it inconvenient to hold the fan in their hand.
The device is officially available for purchase as of April 9th, but the fan will only come in what Dyson calls a "Stone/Blush" (light pink) hue. However, for customers willing to wait, Dyson will also release a "Carnelian/Sky," or red option in May and an "Ink/Cobalt," or dark blue style in June. Also sometime in the middle of the year, Dyson is planning to release other add-ons, such as a Grip Clip and Stroller Mount for using the fan on jackets and bags/backpacks.
The Hushjet Mini Cool is now on sale for $99. As the world continues to face global warming from climate change, Dyson's newest release seems like a smart move as we head into the summer months. An efficient, sleek, and wearable fan might be exactly what we need to stay cool and refreshed as the heat rolls in.
