About two weeks ago, Tim Cook announced that he will be stepping down as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Apple later in September after spending 15 years in charge of the company. His successor is John Ternus, currently the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Cook will be taking the role of Executive Chairman of Apple's Board.
Ternus, currently 51, says that he is "profoundly grateful," among other words, to take over the position. Ternus has worked at Apple for about 25 years, proving that he is worthy of such a high role. Many people have seen Ternus as a likely candidate for Cook's job, though Ternus is not very well-known outside of Silicon Valley, where Apple headquarters are located.
Even before becoming Senior VP of Hardware Engineering in 2021, Ternus helped to release major product lines for Apple such as the iPad and AirPods, as well as his contribution to new generations of iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac, with additions such as the new budget MacBook Neo.
Ternus has brought innovation to the company in the durability and reliability sectors. He has helped to develop new product materials that reduce the company's carbon footprint, such as a recycled aluminum material that is currently used throughout multiple categories of devices. Additionally, Ternus helped to make the Apple Watch Ultra 3 more environmentally friendly through a 3-D printed titanium frame, as well as other advancements to various product repairability to increase their lifespan. Before he joined Apple's Product Design Team in 2001, Ternus worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems, having earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Cook said that he is perfectly "healthy," and his "energy is high." The main reason that he decided to step down from the $4 trillion company was because he feels that Apple is thriving with an amazing road of innovation ahead, and the time is right for the transfer of leadership. Cook will still retain a valuable role at Apple, however, helping in specific areas of the company such as handling relations with international policymakers.
The change in leadership marks the 50th anniversary at Apple, beginning a new era for the tech company. While some products have not been the most successful, such as the Vision Pro augmented reality headset, there is no doubt that the tech giant has some amazing tech planned for the future under its new leader.
